Spring break with Redlife

OK. So maybe everybody is convinced it’s summer, as per dark-skinned people, but it is only the 6th day of the season preceding summer. Stay with me now.

This is the motivation behind “Spring Fiasco”, brought to you by yours truly (Redlife) in collaboration with Redbull, Fish Eagle and Blackberry. Such a list of ‘associates’ should only prove how Redlife solely deals with the big guns in the industry. Logistics?

Wednesday the 7th of September this year hopefully (LOL). Party patrons will be spoiled by the company of Larry (of the Repetoires yes) as a host and two venues in Cappello and/or Cofi, Hatfiled. As if that is not enough, the line up boasts of a double package too. Slip Inc, Oz, Sizwe, Ms Cosmo, Ellipsis, Fixx and Ernest on one side of the ring at Cappello while Harmonix, Zee, Hudson, Soso, Fanatic, Fubz and CoolkidMenzi hold it down at Cofi. All THAT for R 50! How much do you love Redlife?

Follow my lead now. Friday the 9th, Redlife (AGAIN) brings you the Pretoria leg of AKA’s Alter Ego album tour. This time at Moloko, Hatfield featuring DJ’s Sizwe, Zee, Hudson, Deck Burna and Boss Timo at the usual R100 for guys *coughs* and FREE for the mamis till midnight.

I will not repeat my question.

Ok… How much do you love Redlife NOW?

Season’s change

Well, well, well…

T’is the season for bikinis, tra-la-la-la la la la!

Many have been praying on more than bended knees for the winter cold to disappear but moreover the opportunity to wear light weighing clothing items. Even before the break of seasons, the weather was looking up and sending warm greetings to former victims of the so called harsh winter.

Just a few more things, the worst is not over however. The weather as usual is gonna be unpredictable so lest we not get too comfortable in the nudity forte. Let’s bring the spring in in a cautious manner to avoid sustaining any casualties. Alas! Gone are the heaters and unfavourable body warmers but moreover let the best shaved leg be put forward and of course the least better ones hidden. Fair? I agree too. While on that, let us agree that Redlife Sundays just got an upgrade with this welcomed season.

Happy Spring! 🙂

Are blacks being spoon fed too quick?

Being a member of the much younger generation of things, my reference to the struggles of my parents is highly propagated. One can however become acquainted with the events of the past and further make relevant assumptions and conclusions on the many challenges faced.

Upon the break of “democracy” a great number of bodies scrambled for equalisation. Whether be it in business, land distribution and mostly human related rights. Multiple programs were developed for the purpose of giving previously disadvantaged black majorities what they too rightfully deserved as equal citizens of the country. Black Economic Empowerment structures, Tripartite structures were strengthened and phrases such as “affirmative action” became regular features in many plans.

Fast forward to August 2011 when Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti confirms, to my disappointment if not confusion, that nearly 30% farmland bought by government from white owners for black owners have been resold to the previous owners. Basically, they are selling land gained for them back to whom was claimed to have stripped them off their rightful ownership. The concern is not whom the land is sold to or back to but a gap in repairing past damage. It is clear that many black aspiring farmers lack the required skills and expertise, per say, to sustain these farms that have been placed in their laps.

Perhaps it is time government learned to teach and equip society members how to maintain progress manually instead of putting blind trust into automate hand outs to silence wide open wounds and loud cries.

Art, beyond a pastime hobby

Perceptions that art “does not pay” or “is not a good career path” are fast being diminished yet vastly existent. Back in the day, no parent agreed to opening their minds to how much art can make a difference financially if not economically. Today, festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival have contributed as much as  R761 million to South Africa’s GDP – an increase of 7 percent from 2010. Say mama, did you mention something about non-beneficial passions?

Of course everything has humble beginnings. In 2000 the CTIJF only brought in 6000 audience members but today, 11 years later, it is packing 33 500 people. In 2012 it will probably start at 33 502 with I and my “bestie” included this time around.  According to the latest research results from the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Studies, the Western Cape economy enjoyed benefit to the value of R498.6 million this year. This amount rose by 4.9 percent from last year’s figure. Even Minister Paul Mashatile of the Department Of Arts and Culture stamps on the fact that the cultural and creative industries are a major driver of economic growth and job creation.

It’s not just about singing in the shower or putting on make-up and costumes to entertain people, but pulling over some armour to fight a war of passion and essence. In a world where music is becoming more and more influential, it is a mandate to turn stereotypes about this art form (and many others) around. Although you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, education goes a long way. Informing the vast ignorant members of society about the effects and impact of art can contribute to more than just the GDP or tourism return rates. Art is but a hobby, instead a form of expression which can unite worlds apart while bringing healing to a wretched nation. Let’s grow a culture of creating our own initiatives and supporting existing local talent.

Picture a dark lit summer..

The mere thought of summer rings bells of distant sunlit memories with flowy clothing items aside the gracious curves of a certain beauty making her way across one’s path. All looks exceptionally perfect till suddenly some eclipse out of nowhere emerges to bring distraught darkness. “DAMN YOU ESKOM” immediately runs in my mind.

We all know that since 2008 after the introduction of blackouts, which cost the mining sector billions of rands in lost output and hurt the wider economy Eskom has been on a dual battle for regaining trust from citizens while trying to keep up with the ever growing demand for energy supply. It turns out that this summer Eskom is faced with matters of dealing with maintenance backlogs as the demand in winter causes them to slow down on that and focus more on responding to the extra use of electricity from June to August.

Take note, however, that they are not warning of blackouts at all. They are apparently specifying that they will be dedicating more time to ramp up maintenance. If that doesn’t scream load shedding, then Redlife is not the finest business Pretoria has come by thus far.

Basically, get used to finding your fling using a torch, know how to start a bond fire for that stir fry and lastly learn how to read stars. Good thing you’re not gonna be segregated when coming to Redlife Sundays because a friend loadshedded, is still a friend.
